Overview

As the German troops begin their campaign to "relocate" all the Jews of Denmark, Annemarie Johansen's family takes in Annemarie's best friend, Ellen Rosen, and conceals her as part of the family.

Through the eyes of ten-year-old Annemarie, we watch as the Danish Resistance smuggles almost the entire Jewish population of Denmark, nearly seven thousand people, across the sea to Sweden. The heroism of an entire nation reminds us that there was pride and human decency in the world even during a time of terror and war.

Winner of the 1990 Newbery Medal.

i really loved this book! it captured the reality of years 1939-1945 when wwii occurred. although the story is fiction, it accurately depicted how life was for the jews during this time and took readers through the tribulations that annemarie faced to save her best friend ellen and her family (the rosens) from the german soldiers.

As usual, Lois Lowry does a masterful job with bringing an era come to life. Unlike The Giver, this one is historical fiction, based in Copenhagen in 1943. It follows two fictitious families, trying to survive in the midst of Hitler's dictatorship and the peak of the Natzi's Third Reich. I have this specific version, which has an introduction from the author, explaining the real story and the real lives behind the novel. It is definitely a MUST READ!!

Number the stars is such a good book! The book describes how a Jewish family survives during the Nazi occupation. Their friends offer protection and safety temporary. At the time, the Nazi’s are hunting and gathering all of Jews. Since life is getting harder and more dangerous for everyone, it is best for the family to make the decision to find safety somewhere else. I recommend this book to young readers who enjoy adventure and history. #SummerReading
