This is the first book that I read by Ruth Ware, and once I was finished, I was hooked on her as an author and subsequently tore through the rest of her books. When a group of app developers are snowed in from an avalanche, tensions quickly rise and members of the group start to get picked off like flies. One... by... one. This book had me guessing until the end on who the killer was. Ware also includes the app in the murders and the investigation which adds a 21st century approach to a "Murder on the Orient Express" or "Then There Were None" style story.
HPB Staff ReviewOne By One depicts a group of trendy coworkers on a company retreat for their tech business Snoop, at a ritzy resort in the mountains. What should have been a week of skiing, relaxation, and a few presentations swiftly turns lethal, when members of the group start vanishing or being discovered dead, with little to no clues as to who the murderous culprit could be. Seemingly everyone from the charismatic CEO to the introverted tech guy have something to gain from the disappearances and deaths of their peers, which makes the plot all that more suspenseful. This chilling story is told from the perspectives of Erin, the chalet girl who may have secrets of her own to hide, and Liz, the mousy ex-receptionist that somehow managed to get herself dragged into this nightmarish disaster. Ware combines eerie imagery and mysterious characters to leave readers feeling unsettled yet enthralled to discover whodunit.
