Red Knife is the eighth book in the Cork O' Connor mysteries series set in Minnesota. The geographic local of Krueger's book are displayed both in the description of physical landscape, as well as in the dialogue between characters. Most current and former residents of Minnesota will more than likely be familiar with the characters, not by name, but rather as archetypes of the typical "Minnesotan folk". Cork O' Connor, a former detective turned private investigator, who himself shares ancestry with both Ojibwe as well as Irish residents, is called upon to solve the mysterious death of a wealthy business man's daughter who seems to have suffered from a fatal drug overdose. When the wealthy businessman, Buck Reinhardt, declares that it was surely a group of native youth, who call themselves the "Red Boyz," the responsibility falls upon O'Connor to find out whether the young men are indeed guilty, or if something larger, more sinister is truly to blame. With multiple story lines and a slew of rich characters, Krueger entertains, intrigues, and educates the readers about Ojibwe culture and history in Northern Minnesota all the while stringing them along until a surprising and satisfying end.
