Overview

Ensign Andrew Dahl has just been assigned to the Universal Union Capital Ship Intrepid, flagship of the Universal Union since the year 2456. It's a prestige posting, with the chance to serve on "Away Missions" alongside the starship's famous senior officers.

Life couldn't be better...until Andrew begins to realize that 1) every Away Mission involves a lethal confrontation with alien forces, 2) the ship's senior officers always survive these confrontations, and 3) sadly, at least one low-ranking crew member is invariably killed. Unsurprisingly, the savvier crew members below decks avoid Away Missions at all costs.

Then Andrew stumbles on information that transforms his and his colleagues' understanding of what the starship Intrepid really is...and offers them a crazy, high-risk chance to save their own lives.

  • You don't want to be in a TV show.

    Benjamin H. - 2 years 10 months ago

You're in space, exploring the universe. You are surrounded by brilliant peers and amazing technology. Unfortunately, you're not one of the lead characters, and your life or death is measured in a single commercial break. In a quiet way, John Scalzi's novel Redshirts uses genre television clichs, especially from Star Trek, to argue for a more humane and caring world, one where no supporting character is disposable. It doesn't hurt that this book is very funny, to anyone, not just Trekkies. It's a friendly and generous compliment to the little guy, which we all are, really, even those of us who take the lead.

Very lazy effort by Scalzi, with obvious plot developments. Not worth the effort to read. Very disappointed in Scalzi with this book. Not sure what his motivation could have been?
