Jump in on the ground floor of this critically acclaimed graphic novel series from writer Brian K. Vaughan (Y: The Last Man, now adapted for the small screen on Hulu) and artist Fiona Staples (Archie) for an epic adventure spanning galaxies as they struggle to raise their mixed race child amidst a deadly civil war in which both sides want them all captured or killed or worse. (For mature audiences.)
HPB Staff ReviewIf you are thinking about starting a new comic series, please consider Saga. If you're not really into comics but are looking for a beautiful story about love, both romantic and parental, please consider Saga. If you think stories about love (either romantic or parental) are ridiculous, but you like a good frolic with drug abuse, bounty hunters, and plenty of violence, please consider Saga. If you aren't interested in those things, but you think a lot about the generational nature of violence and war, please consider Saga. Maybe you just like great illustrative art? Consider Saga. Funny talking seals? Consider Saga. Great characters with real backstories and plenty of baggage? Consider Saga. In short, please, do yourself a favor and give Saga a try. It's amazing.
HPB Staff ReviewA beautifully illustrated love story of two characters whose planets are at war with one another. They overcome all obstacles they face as a united force, the likes of which the Universe has never seen before. Filled with unforgettable supporting characters, (Ghus is the best) this is a quick read that will leave you with a lasting impression.
HPB Staff ReviewCan Brian K. Vaughn do wrong? It doesn't appear so. The Eisner award winner is at it again with this rich, complex space opera. It tells the tale of Marko and Alana and how these two alien soldiers -from opposing sides met, fell in love, and...had a child(?). Their child could be the key to this multigenerational war ending. Both sides set things in motion to end this threat and continue their epic war. Volume 1 introduces you to all the key players. The art style of Fiona Staples is just plain glorious. It has a hand-drawn animation cel style that, in my opinion, works perfectly with the science fiction/space opera setting. As for the writing, Vaughn seems to channel his inner George R. R. Martin and lets it be known that nobody in this story is safe from death or harm. If you like Star Wars, miss the Expanded Universe, and like the idea of Lying Cats, then this book should put a smile on your face. Interesting side note: This comic was one of the ten most-challenged books of 2014. The challenges were to its perceived, "age inappropriate content" and "propagating anti-family values". Ultimately, the libraries and schools opted to keep the graphic novel in circulation.
HPB Staff ReviewFor years, friends have suggested I start reading Saga, and for years I've put it off. THAT WAS A TERRIBLE MISTAKE. Saga has a little something for everyone. There's political intrigue, romance, rebellion, humor and a rich universe full of interesting occupants. The main story follows a pair of unlikely lovers and their new baby as they live on the run, trying their best to avoid the countless factions who are chomping at the bit to catch them. I won't spoil anything for you, but you're in for a treat.
