Overview

Official U.S. edition with full color illustrations throughout.

#1 New York Times Bestseller

The Summer Reading Pick for President Barack Obama, Bill Gates, and Mark Zuckerberg, now available as a beautifully packaged paperback

From a renowned historian comes a groundbreaking narrative of humanity's creation and evolution--a #1 international bestseller--that explores the ways in which biology and history have defined us and enhanced our understanding of what it means to be "human."

One hundred thousand years ago, at least six different species of humans inhabited Earth. Yet today there is only one--homo sapiens. What happened to the others? And what may happen to us?

Most books about the history of humanity pursue either a historical or a biological approach, but Dr. Yuval Noah Harari breaks the mold with this highly original book that begins about 70,000 years ago with the appearance of modern cognition. From examining the role evolving humans have played in the global ecosystem to charting the rise of empires, Sapiens integrates history and science to reconsider accepted narratives, connect past developments with contemporary concerns, and examine specific events within the context of larger ideas.

Dr. Harari also compels us to look ahead, because over the last few decades humans have begun to bend laws of natural selection that have governed life for the past four billion years. We are acquiring the ability to design not only the world around us, but also ourselves. Where is this leading us, and what do we want to become?

Featuring 27 photographs, 6 maps, and 25 illustrations/diagrams, this provocative and insightful work is sure to spark debate and is essential reading for aficionados of Jared Diamond, James Gleick, Matt Ridley, Robert Wright, and Sharon Moalem.

History at its finest

Yuval Noah Harari does a wonderful job of taking information that could easily be dull and makes a page turner in my opinion. This book will definitely make you re-think what you believe and why.

This book answers so many cultural questions, the biggest one being, "How did so many societies, religions, etc., end up in Patriarchies?"

  • A history of our species

When we think of the history of humans, we don't often think of the family we left behind. In Sapiens, Yuval Noah Harari explores our history with the other, long-forgotten human species that once roamed the Earth with us. Why did they disappear? Why did we stay? And most importantly, what does our cumulative past mean for the future of Homo Sapiens? Harari presents all of these unanswerable questions with theories that attempt to answer, yet can never be certain. The reader gets to explore different theories that pertain to the different stages of evolution we as a species have progressed through. It's a fascinating read that paints why and how we humans have survived so long, and perhaps how much longer we can go.

  • A fascinating look into the effects of Humans through time.

Harari takes a unique look at human history in Sapiens. He asks the questions of our past; how we have shaped our world, the animals and plants around us. How did humans come to create societies, to trust money, books? How did we create laws and governments and become enslaved by them and consumerism? Finally, Harari asks the questions of where we are going. A fascinating and enjoyable read that will spur your mind into a race of questions and wonderment about who we are and where we are going.

I have been recommending this to everyone I know. From the beginning of human time to the present, so many amazing and important things have happened. Sapiens covers them all. This will easily be our favorite homeschooling history book, yet.
