  • Mankind seeks solace among the stars.

    Jennifer S. - 6 years 6 months ago

This novel follows a well-worn premise: Life on Earth is facing extinction, and mankind seeks solace among the stars. While many novels (such as James Blish's "And All the Stars a Stage") send humanity far into the reaches of interstellar space, Stephenson considers what present-day humanity could accomplish with current technology if we were forced to flee Earth in order to survive. Stephenson's novel is thoroughly researched, and while at times it can get a bit technical, none of the detail is superfluous. The tale follows multiple characters in the present (some based on recognizable real-life individuals) and in the far future as they abandon (and reclaim) the Earth. It is an epic in the truest sense of the word, and it does not disappoint. The only complaint I can lodge against this story is that sometimes the plot felt too constructed, too convenient. It is a serious challenge to construct a work of fiction that feels organic and natural, and for the most part Stephenson succeeds in this, yet there are some aspects of the story that feel too contrived to have happened naturally. Nevertheless, the story is well worth the read.

  • An Epic Transhuman Tale

    Jeff M. - 7 years 3 months ago

Seveneves begins with an explosion that puts humanity on a path to save itself from certain annihilation. What follows is a race against a clock using our collective knowledge, technology and combined world efforts to save ourselves so that there will be a future for humans. On the way we see the best and the worst in us all. Can we survive and what will humanity look like if we do? This is an epic journey and there is no better storyteller than Neal Stephenson to take you on it.
