This was a book that definitely took many twists and turns that gave you a false sense of prediction. There were times where I thought I knew exactly where the plot was going to go and how the characters were going to react and play out their schemes. I was so very wrong. Although the ending still seemed predictable, it was left on a very nail-biting cliffhanger that made me buy its next and final installment.
HPB Staff ReviewIn this first installment of her second Grisha trilogy, Bardugo cultivates a dark story from a viewpoint that readers do not often see. This story tells of a bad guy's road to revenge, the things he does to rise to power and the people he takes in along the way. Six of Crows cultivates a story of thugs and thieves that will have readers hanging on until the last word.
HPB Staff ReviewSix of Crows and its sequel Crooked Kingdom are two books I couldn't put down and when I was finished I wished it had never ended. The story was interesting, the world inside the book was very rich and beautifully described, each character was different and unique, each chapter was in the point of view of 6 different characters and it made you understand and connect with them on some level. Leigh Bardugo once again creates an interesting world inside her Grisha Universe.
HPB Staff ReviewSix of Crows is a story about six outcasts who band together in an attempt to carry out an impossible heist. Although the six are all misfits in their own way, they scarcely ever see eye to eye and find that they must quickly learn to work together so that they will be successful in their mission. Because while success means fame and innumerable riches, failure means certain death. This novel deserves every word of praise that it has received. Badrugo's descriptions are vivid and are never lazy or vague, and she knows just how to pace the novel so that you are constantly wondering what is going to happen next. The characters are utterly unforgettable--there is not a single one of the six that you will not care about--and Bardugo builds their world in a way that makes you feel as though it could actually be a real place with real cities, real languages, real histories, and real cultures and traditions. This is a book that I believe any person of any age can enjoy, and I eagerly await the next installment to the series.
HPB Staff ReviewWhen reading teen fiction, it's hard to sift through stories that are juvenile; the ones that focus far too much on interpersonal drama, that have overly simple (or overly complicated) fantasy worlds, or ones with characters that you're meant to project onto, making them blank and lifeless. Six of Crows cuts through all of it, delivering a stunning, gorgeously detailed fantasy world without ever derailing your suspension of disbelief. It has characters that jump from the pages, that demand you care about them even while showing you the ugly sides of their personalities. The suspense and tension it uses to push the plot forward are not drawn from miscommunication or misunderstandings but from political intrigue and dangerous foes. If you pick up this book, you will not be disappointed. It is directed at older teens but can easily be enjoyed by adults. It is light years ahead of Bardugo's previous trilogy, and even if you didn't enjoy that one, I recommend picking up this duology and giving her one more try.
