    This novel, written by Nobel Prize laureate Toni Morrison, tells the story of Milkman Dead, a young man struggling to find his place in the world. He finds himself torn between the avarice and misogyny of his father, the violence and prejudice of his best friend, Guitar, and the subservience of his mother and sisters. Desperate to forge his own identity, he visits his father's estranged sister, Pilate, and learns of a dark and magical family history that sends Milkman on a journey south to discover his roots. He discovers that in order to define oneself in the present, an individual must often plunge the depths of the past. The book comes to a suspenseful and satisfying climax, and contains some of Morrison's most lyrical writing, as well as her most adept use of magical realism to date. Song of Solomon is one of those rare books that is beautifully written, emotionally affecting, and incredibly fun to read.
