Overview

"What happens when we die? Does the light just go out and that's that--the million-year nap? Or will some part of my personality, my me-ness persist? What will that feel like? What will I do all day? Is there a place to plug in my lap-top?" In an attempt to find out, Mary Roach brings her tireless curiosity to bear on an array of contemporary and historical soul-searchers: scientists, schemers, engineers, mediums, all trying to prove (or disprove) that life goes on after we die.

  • The Science of Dead Bodies!

    Katie L. - 4 years ago

Mary Roach is an incredible author and she did not disappoint with Spook. She has thoroughly researched all the things that WILL (and all the things that COULD) happen to your body after you die. Between the normal occurrences at the funeral home to the ways cadavers are used in medical research, you will be amazed to know about all of the things your (dead) body can do. It's humorous and informative. I'm not typically a non-fiction reader, but Mary Roach never fails to keep me interested. If you're looking for something educational but also a little bit quirky, then I highly recommend Spook or any other title by Mary Roach!

  • Is there a Light Beyond These Woods?

    James C. - 5 years 2 months ago

Why do weird people believe even weirder things? That's a question for a different book. "Spook: Science Tackles the Afterlife", by Mary Roach, doesn't judge people who believe that science has proven reincarnation, the existence of the soul, that houses can be haunted, that the dead communicate with the living, and that some ghosts really are friendly. Roach simply tells the bizarre and true stories of people who have a need to prove that there is a Light Beyond These Woods and don't believe that blind faith is enough. They believe that science can and has proven to their satisfaction that we humans are immortal and we need not fear the Grim Reaper. Yards of ectoplasm hanging limply in the lap of and at the feet of a "medium", yes. But, Death? Not to fear.
