I'm a sucker for any story that rewrites the Jack the Ripper killings. Kerri Maniscalco has done an excellent job reimagining the events of those dark months in London and has created a wonderful protagonist as well. Audrey Wadsworth is supposed to be the perfect Victorian lady, but all she wants to do is study forensics under the tutelage of her uncle, who has taught her everything he knows about autopsies and how the human body reacts during and after death. Then the Jack the Ripper killings begin, pulling Audrey, her brother, and her new friend/romantic interest Thomas Cresswell, into the investigation. With great twists and mysterious turns, this is an amazing first addition to James Patterson's new Young Adult publisher, Jimmy Patterson.
HPB Staff ReviewKeri Maniscalco does an amazing job of incorporating historical events within the series. The first book is captivating because it is about a young woman in the Victorian Era not wanting to just perform her expected duties, but is devoted to science. You follow her throughout her journey of science and the trials of being a woman in this particular era. The last in the series comes out this September and I cannot wait. Definitely a must read for someone who loves historical fiction and is looking for a strong female lead.
HPB Staff ReviewSet in nineteenth century London at the height of the Jack the Ripper murders, this dark and twisty period piece gives a new life to the well known story. The story follows main character Audrey Rose, a young woman studying forensic medicine against societies wishes, as she and her fellow scientists try to solve the gruesome murders that have baffled the police. If dark academia is your thing, this book is for you.
