Overview

In the first novel in the #1 New York Times bestselling Dresden Files series, Harry Dresden's investigation of a grisly double murder pulls him into the darkest depths of magical Chicago...

As a professional wizard, Harry Dresden knows firsthand that the "everyday" world is actually full of strange and magical things--and most of them don't play well with humans. And those that do enjoy playing with humans far too much. He also knows he's the best at what he does. Technically, he's the only at what he does. But even though Harry is the only game in town, business--to put it mildly--stinks.

So when the Chicago P.D. bring him in to consult on a double homicide committed with black magic, Harry's seeing dollar signs. But where there's black magic, there's a black mage behind it. And now that mage knows Harry's name...

"A great series--fast-paced, vividly realized and with a hero/narrator who's excellent company."--Cinescape

  • Wizard Detective, how can you go wrong?

    Connor M. - 8 months ago

I came into this book expecting a wizard detective, and that's exactly what I got! It's got a gritty noir style with a flair of amusement and magic! Harry Dresden fits the bill perfectly if you're looking for a hard-boiled detective. And on top of that, Butcher does an excellent job blending in the occult and magical misdoings into the life of a PI. Highly recommended! 10/10 Wizard Approved

  • Modern day wizard meets private detective

    Brecah H. - 1 year 8 months ago

Need an escape from normal life? Pick up this first book in the Dresden Files series by Jim Butcher. In it you will meet Harry Dresden, a goofy, endearing, modern day wizard turned private detective who has a heart of gold and the ability to make a huge mess saving the citizens of Chicago from the evils in the world that most of us don't see. While some think this book moves slow, it sets the scene for those that follow. Butcher's characters are ones that you will grow to love or hate, and there are twists that you won't see coming. Overall a fantastic urban fantasy series! Pick it up and you will not be disappointed!

  • Oh I know I'm funny, just very underappreciated. - Harry Dresden

    Justin J. - 2 years 2 months ago

I quickly fell in love with Jim Butcher's Dresden Files. I read all 15 books in less than six months. A noble Knight of the cloth, a neurotic M.E., a no nonsense policewoman, and the wizard of sarcasm himself Harry Dresden, make for a great cast of characters in this Urban Fantasy series. Starting with Storm Front, Harry has to deal with a wife who is out of sorts looking for her husband, a string of magical murders where he is suspect numero uno, and a disgruntled mob boss. Join Harry in his adventure as he attempts to unravel the mystery and make his rent, because being Chicago's only Wizard in the yellow pages isn't easy.

  • Harry Dresden WIizard for hire.

    Darrell M. - 4 years 6 months ago

Harry Dresden, Wizard for hire. It's an awesome modern day take on both magic and noir. The author, Jim Butcher, writes like he saw "Maltese Falcon" and thought, "That plot needs magic!". Well, he was right. Great storytelling, fun details and a relatable hero round-out a quick tale of turmoil and tension. "Storm Front" is the perfect lightning strike that punctuates the beginning of an electrifying series!

  • Gandalf with an IV of red bull and a .44 revolver.

    Will S. - 5 years ago

Harry Dresden - Wizard. Lost items found. Paranormal investigations. Consulting. Advice. Reasonable rates. No love potions, endless purses, parties, or other entertainment. So reads the yellow pages entry written by the irrepressible Harry Dresden, Chicago's only professional wizard. Jim Butcher's series chronicles the adventures of Harry, who straddles urban fantasy and noir while cracking wise with the best of them. Storm Front, like all of the Dresden Files novels, moves at a breakneck pace, and you won't want to put it down once it grabs you. Between the action, well-considered plot, beautifully crafted setting and magical world, and the humor provided by narrator Harry (who refuses to get into trouble by halves), Butcher's novel has a lot going for it. But perhaps Storm Front's greatest strength is that it is but the first of a long list of Dresden novels. With fifteen books and counting, Butcher's world only becomes bigger and more developed, Harry more complex, the cast of characters wider and richer, the already solid writing more masterful, and the incidental property damage more catastrophic. In short, pick up Storm Front. If you like it, keep reading. You won't regret it.
