Imagine the satisfaction of sinking your teeth into a sublime sirloin. A medium-rare, juicy cut of steak from cattle raised and bred with the intent of satisfying your particular palate. Sounds divine, right? But not all meat can be choice beef. In fact, in Bazterrica's "Tender is the Flesh," beef is a forbidden delicacy; according to the government (in a dystopian world), a deadly virus renders all animals inedible. With no meat to satisfy its hunger, humanity puts itself on the chopping block... "Tender is the Flesh" follows Marcos- a man who knows the ins and outs of the meat supplying industry. The plot leads the reader through a horrifying tour of Marco's processing plant (and unsavory daily life) while also raising critical questions about the current state of humanity. Bazterrica has mastered the art of suspense and shock value, as each turn of the page draws the reader closer to the book's unfathomable conclusion. For those with an insatiable taste for horror fiction, dystopian elements, and splatterpunk, "Tender is the Flesh" will definitely succeed in satisfying your hunger.
HPB Staff ReviewThis book was hard to read. I personally did not enjoy it, though it doesn't mean it's bad. It has bleak messages about socialization, humanity, and dehumanization (which is to be expected, given its premise). Despair and disgust sat with me through the entire read, so if you're looking for hope or something uplifting, this is not the book for you. Fortunately it is a quick and easy read. If it was any longer, I don't think I would have been able to finish it.
Troubling. Nihilistic. Graphic. Relentless. Brutal. All the things everyone said it'd be. It was also beautifully written, and such an original take on the classic "international virus" story. I can see how some people complain that once you get past the cannibalism that it's quite boring, but I truly never felt bored once. Yes, not a lot *happened,* but I still felt the pace maintained a lot of speed. The narrator (as unlikable as I found him) propelled me through the story so quickly I struggled to keep up with all the information. Bazterrica did a wonderful job building this world, and I kept wondering more and more about how other aspects of society functioned in this near future. #SpringPicks
