This book is the first in a series of three and serves as the sort of introduction that grabs you and never loosens its grip. Alongside the titular Black Gryphon - just one of several nonhumans - the main cast of characters is varied and complex, each with a story of their own within the larger plot. Surrounded by the horrors of a long war with monsters and men alike, life goes on. Action and danger highlight the poignant interpersonal moments that much more, and this author does a spectacular job of making her characters read as real people - despite the fact that some are magical creatures! If you like fantasy, if you've ever enjoyed an Anne McCaffrey novel, you will love this book and this author.
