Overview

"Essential reading for anyone interested in understanding and treating traumatic stress and the scope of its impact on society." --Alexander McFarlane, Director of the Centre for Traumatic Stress Studies

A pioneering researcher transforms our understanding of trauma and offers a bold new paradigm for healing in this New York Times bestseller

Trauma is a fact of life. Veterans and their families deal with the painful aftermath of combat; one in five Americans has been molested; one in four grew up with alcoholics; one in three couples have engaged in physical violence. Dr. Bessel van der Kolk, one of the world's foremost experts on trauma, has spent over three decades working with survivors. In The Body Keeps the Score, he uses recent scientific advances to show how trauma literally reshapes both body and brain, compromising sufferers' capacities for pleasure, engagement, self-control, and trust. He explores innovative treatments--from neurofeedback and meditation to sports, drama, and yoga--that offer new paths to recovery by activating the brain's natural neuroplasticity. Based on Dr. van der Kolk's own research and that of other leading specialists, The Body Keeps the Score exposes the tremendous power of our relationships both to hurt and to heal--and offers new hope for reclaiming lives.

I read this book concurrently with undergoing PTSD therapy and it was so helpful and informative in my understanding of what had happened, and was happening to my brain both pre and post PTSD. I frankly think it would benefit everyone to read it as someone you know, statistically, has suffered PTSD.

  • Intriguing subject; insightful and clear explanations; hard to put down!

The book is excellently written and contains many fascinating stories and anecdotes. Dr. Van Der Kolk masterfully conveys how the brain and body respond to trauma in both the short and long terms. The book also goes into detail about both the lived experience of suffering from trauma as well as what is happening from a biological point of view. Avenues that Dr. Van Der Kolk has used for treatment are explored at the end. I found this book hard to put down, and it is a must-read for anyone that thinks they may have suffered from trauma in their lifetimes, or is struggling with mental health issues in general.

  • Necessary read for all adults

Also, for those who have not read The Body Keeps The Score YET, please make time to read this book. It is an eye opener and useful for everyone that interacts with other humans on a daily basis ( i.e. you). A lot of times it is easy to label someone ( especially children) as bad, rebellious, slow, weird and just plain ‘ol crazy. Very rarely do we (and some MDs and PhD holders) take a moment to ask or figure out why - and this book will give it to you- straight with no chaser. In short, trauma can cause your brain to not work as it should, which can and will lead to a long list of physical AND emotional diagnoses- if left unchecked and unresolved. This book gives you a list of concise symptoms and all of the possible treatments and their relative effectiveness on various patients. I feel smarter after reading this and more empathetic towards others. #SpringPicks
