Overview

A "clever and wonderfully chilling" (Fiona Barton) suspense novel from the award-winning author of The Haunting of Maddy Clare--a National Bestseller

Vermont, 1950. There's a place for the girls whom no one wants--the troublemakers, the illegitimate, the too smart for their own good. It's called Idlewild Hall, and local legend says the boarding school is haunted. Four roommates bond over their whispered fears, their budding friendship blossoming--until one of them mysteriously disappears....

Vermont, 2014. Twenty years ago, journalist Fiona Sheridan's elder sister's body was found in the overgrown fields near the ruins of Idlewild Hall. And although her sister's boyfriend was tried and convicted of the murder, Fiona can't stop revisiting the events, unable to shake the feeling that something was never right about the case.

When Fiona discovers that Idlewild Hall is being restored by an anonymous benefactor, she decides to write a story about it. But a shocking discovery during renovations links the loss of her sister to secrets that were meant to stay hidden in the past--and a voice that won't be silenced....

  • A Shirley Jackson-esque ghost story

    Ashlie N. - 4 years 2 months ago

Idlewild Hall is a place for girls who aren't wanted. For girls with something wrong with them. Even if that something wrong is nothing they could control or had any part in deciding. In 1950 a girl goes missing, even though her dorm mates insist she was murdered. Fast forward to 2014, Idlewild Hall has been closed for 35 years, but is about to be restored and reopened. Fiona Sheridan is a freelance journalist with a bleak connection to the property; her sister was found murdered on its property 20 years before. When a discovery of a body on the property halts the restoration, Fiona sets out to uncover the secrets long buried about her town, the school and the missing girl from 1950. Both storylines are compelling - especially after they merge. I could not put this book down and was very satisfied with the ending.

#SummerReading The plot was so intriguing. I loved how the author told both stories separately but showed how much they intertwined. I could not put it down, I think I ended up til after 3am finishing the last few chapters because there was no way I wasn't finding out all of the secrets. The characters were so well written and believable.

I really liked the premise of this book and the different characters. The characters really made this book and the diversity between them really added to the plot! The mystery aspect draws the reader in from the first chapter and keeps them wanting to read more! I really enjoyed reading this! #SummerReading
