Overview

The Circle is the exhilarating new novel from Dave Eggers, best-selling author of A Hologram for the King, a finalist for the National Book Award.

When Mae Holland is hired to work for the Circle, the world's most powerful internet company, she feels she's been given the opportunity of a lifetime. The Circle, run out of a sprawling California campus, links users' personal emails, social media, banking, and purchasing with their universal operating system, resulting in one online identity and a new age of civility and transparency. As Mae tours the open-plan office spaces, the towering glass dining facilities, the cozy dorms for those who spend nights at work, she is thrilled with the company's modernity and activity. There are parties that last through the night, there are famous musicians playing on the lawn, there are athletic activities and clubs and brunches, and even an aquarium of rare fish retrieved from the Marianas Trench by the CEO. Mae can't believe her luck, her great fortune to work for the most influential company in the world--even as life beyond the campus grows distant, even as a strange encounter with a colleague leaves her shaken, even as her role at the Circle becomes increasingly public. What begins as the captivating story of one woman's ambition and idealism soon becomes a heart-racing novel of suspense, raising questions about memory, history, privacy, democracy, and the limits of human knowledge.

  • The distant future, next year.

The Circle is either the funniest horror novel I've ever read, or it's the scariest funny novel I've ever read. Dave Eggers is either brilliantly satirizing the very near future, or recoiling in horror at where he thinks we are headed. This book shows Eggers thinking in new directions, and perhaps the first grown-up novel about the internet.

  • a warning just in time... or too late?

    Andrea B. - 3 years 11 months ago

Many dystopian novels begin at the end of the story- the giant impossibly corrupt regime, the inevitable cracks in the system, the plucky rebels realizing what they must do, etc. I have ALWAYS wondered, well, how did that Impossibly Corrupt Regime get its start? How did it amass its overwhelming power? The Circle gives a very solid answer that seems uncomfortably prescient given its decade-old publication date.

  • A must read in this age of social media

    victoria m. - 4 years ago

Oh my goodness… this book made me think about all of the social media, etc. and how much time people put into it. The characters were interesting, and likable. I enjoyed reading this book so much, and now I’m on to the second book, The Every. I highly recommend this book.

  • A most terrifying novel based on the way we live our lives.

    Ada P. - 5 years 7 months ago

Terrifying. From the very beginning you have this feeling that things are going to get ugly. And when they do, there's never a respite. never the chance to make it good again. It took me a few days to recover from all the anxiety that'd been building inside me as I read on. And even when you put the book down you know the story is out there, unended. just going on an on. In our everyday lives.
