Overview

Winner of the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Award. Alice Walker's iconic modern classic is now a Penguin Book.

A powerful cultural touchstone of modern American literature, The Color Purple depicts the lives of African American women in early twentieth-century rural Georgia. Separated as girls, sisters Celie and Nettie sustain their loyalty to and hope in each other across time, distance and silence. Through a series of letters spanning twenty years, first from Celie to God, then the sisters to each other despite the unknown, the novel draws readers into its rich and memorable portrayals of Celie, Nettie, Shug Avery and Sofia and their experience. The Color Purple broke the silence around domestic and sexual abuse, narrating the lives of women through their pain and struggle, companionship and growth, resilience and bravery. Deeply compassionate and beautifully imagined, Alice Walker's epic carries readers on a spirit-affirming journey towards redemption and love.

  • A timeless classic by an important American aurthor. Anyone who enjoys a great novel, will enjoy this.

Alice Walker is a gifted and skillful writer, I'd read this before reading The Color Purple, it was not incorrect. Her characters develop as the plot develops, but the story is character driven, which is not always successful by other authors. Ms Walker handles her characters with care and love, and the reader cannot help developing an empathy with them. I came to this book with a certain apprehension that I would not be able to enjoy and appreciate it, I was wrong, this is a work by a great American author, you won't be disappointed.

  • Keeps on giving and giving well after you’re done reading.

The Color Purple is SO many things! It is about oppression and racism and sexism and domestic violence BUT also about the enduring spirit of women, sisters, African Americans, father-daughter relationships - like I said this book is SO SO much, you need to read it and then digest. And then read it again to get it. It’s beautiful. The characters are lively members of your family slowly coming together between the pages.

#bannedbooks This book was assigned to me while I was in high school. It opened my eyes to a beautiful friendship between two women that meant so much more. It was a great read to as a young adult to see the world through a different lens.
