    On the morning of Edmond Dantes' betrothal breakfast, Dantes is arrested and charged with being a traitor to the crown of France. Without trial, he is shipped off to prison, where he languishes for eleven years. With the help of another prisoner, Abb Faria, Dantes pieces together the strange events, fears and petty jealousies that landed him in his terrible predicament. Dantes escapes from prison, acquires a fortune and seeks revenge on all those who deceived him so many years ago, including his former fiance and her husband. However, Dantes also shows great loyalty and love to those who remained true to him. Though the guilty get their due, the innocent also get caught in the web that Dantes weaves, turning him from his revenge, perhaps a little too late. Dantes' unwavering loyalty to his true friends and his commitment to vengeance will completely capture the reader.

    One of the most harrowing tales of betrayal, heartbreak, and revenge in the history of classic literature. It is worth reading at any time in one's life, but with age and understanding, the subtext changes for those who care to read it again. The tale has also served as the basis for a fantastic film interpretation directed by Kevin Reynolds and starring Jim Caviezel and Guy Pearce.
