This is the first in a delicious series of murder mysteries with a complex and dark British P.I. and his assistant. The books develop friendships, a rich past, beautiful characters and some dark plot twists. It is clean enough for your mom to read, dark enough that it would never be considered cozy and has characters that will have you pre-ordering the next one.
HPB Staff ReviewGood story with a few twists, dragged on just a bit but overall very engaging! I enjoyed her writing style.
I had no plan of reading this book until a review 'Career of Evil' third in the series, caught my attention and I'm nerdy enough that I couldn't just read a series out of order. It was no secret that mystery author, Robert Galbraith is a pseudonym for J.K. Rowling. While the 'Harry Potter" series was totally fabulous, her adult outing, 'The Casual Vacancy' was not. 'The Cuckoo's Calling' changed that thinking! I actually listened to it and it's sequel, 'The Silkworm' on audio, unabridged, of course. Here, the author addresses issues of race, class and sex--well done! The main character, private detective Cormoran Strike, is tasked with proving a police-ruled suicide is really murder. Strike is an honorably flawed man; damaged body and soul, but you can't resist him or the story he tells. It's a compulsive read.
