Overview

The #1 international bestseller, soon to be a major TV series for HBO
"One of the best books of the year." - USA Today
"Robert Galbraith has written a highly entertaining book... Strike and his now-permanent assistant Robin... have become a team--a team whose further adventures the reader cannot help eagerly awaiting." - Michiko Kakutani, New York Times
After losing his leg to a land mine in Afghanistan, Cormoran Strike is barely scraping by as a private investigator. He's down to one client, and risks losing even his office--where, after breaking up with his longtime girlfriend, he's currently living.
Then John Bristow walks through his door with an amazing story. His sister, the legendary supermodel Lula Landry, known to her friends as the Cuckoo, famously fell to her death a few months earlier in a seeming suicide. The case plunges Strike into the world of multimillionaire beauties, rock-star boyfriends, and desperate designers, and introduces him to every variety of pleasure, enticement, seduction, and delusion known to man.
Introducing Cormoran Strike, The Cuckoo's Calling is the acclaimed first crime novel by J.K. Rowling writing under the pseudonym Robert Galbraith, soon to be a major TV series for HBO.

  • Mystery with character

This is the first in a delicious series of murder mysteries with a complex and dark British P.I. and his assistant. The books develop friendships, a rich past, beautiful characters and some dark plot twists. It is clean enough for your mom to read, dark enough that it would never be considered cozy and has characters that will have you pre-ordering the next one.

Good story with a few twists, dragged on just a bit but overall very engaging! I enjoyed her writing style.

  • Cormoran Strike is the new 'best' thing!

I had no plan of reading this book until a review 'Career of Evil' third in the series, caught my attention and I'm nerdy enough that I couldn't just read a series out of order. It was no secret that mystery author, Robert Galbraith is a pseudonym for J.K. Rowling. While the 'Harry Potter" series was totally fabulous, her adult outing, 'The Casual Vacancy' was not. 'The Cuckoo's Calling' changed that thinking! I actually listened to it and it's sequel, 'The Silkworm' on audio, unabridged, of course. Here, the author addresses issues of race, class and sex--well done! The main character, private detective Cormoran Strike, is tasked with proving a police-ruled suicide is really murder. Strike is an honorably flawed man; damaged body and soul, but you can't resist him or the story he tells. It's a compulsive read.
