Overview

Now a major motion picture starring Matthew McConaughey and Idris Elba

"An impressive work of mythic magnitude that may turn out to be Stephen King's greatest literary achievement" (The Atlanta Journal-Constitution), The Gunslinger is the first volume in the epic Dark Tower Series.

A #1 national bestseller, The Gunslinger introduces readers to one of Stephen King's most powerful creations, Roland of Gilead: The Last Gunslinger. He is a haunting figure, a loner on a spellbinding journey into good and evil. In his desolate world, which mirrors our own in frightening ways, Roland tracks The Man in Black, encounters an enticing woman named Alice, and begins a friendship with the boy from New York named Jake.

Inspired in part by the Robert Browning narrative poem, "Childe Roland to the Dark Tower Came," The Gunslinger is "a compelling whirlpool of a story that draws one irretrievable to its center" (Milwaukee Sentinel). It is "brilliant and fresh...and will leave you panting for more" (Booklist).

  • One of Stephen King's Greatest

This series was my introduction to Stephen King. I thoroughly enjoyed the series. It starts out sounding like a science fiction western but grows into so much more. I read the series in preparation for the movie that came out. This book is so much better than the movie and I would highly recommend skipping the movie and reading the eight book series. There are some amazing characters and inspiration for all genres.

  • Everything you could want in a book.

Stephen King's The Gunslinger starts the reader on a gunslinger's thrilling quest which stretches across a seven(ish) book series set on an old western backdrop plagued with the stuff from science fiction nightmares. The Gunslinger catches your attention with action and romance and draws you through the other side as Roland of Gilead treks faithfully across worlds to find the Dark Tower, the nexus of the universe, of all universes. King skillfully weaves science-fiction, old westerns, and New York jive with a dash of his patented brand of horror to create something entirely unique to the genre.

  • Maybe King’s best!

    Timothy L. - 5 years ago

Possibly my favorite novel of all time, at least my favorite Stephen King, and that speaks volumes. I felt a “Man with no name” vibe from Clint Eastwood spaghetti Westerns- a mysterious stranger on a mission who holds many secrets. The seven “Dark Tower” books in this series pretty much unveil those secrets, but this is a stand alone epic. The story fits in well with the current trend of post apocalyptic books and tv and movie output although written decades earlier. The gunslinger himself is after a man in black and seems to have the whole surviving world to overcome in his quest. And he is very much able to rise to that challenge.#SpringPicks

  • Introduction to the series

#SummerReading I’ve heard others say how this is different from Mr. King’s other books. As that maybe true, I understood this to be the introduction to a legendary series. I enjoyed the twists and turns that happened along the way and cannot wait to see where the story goes.

  • 5 star, excellent read

The first book of the Dark Tower series is worth a read just on its own. The whole series is wonderful, different from other Stephen King books, but the best of his work, in my opinion.
