Overview

From the Pulitzer Prize finalist, "the single most compelling, lucid, and lyrical contemporary account of the absurdity of U.S. border policy" (The Atlantic).

In May 2001, a group of men attempted to cross the Mexican border into the desert of southern Arizona, through the deadliest region of the continent, the "Devil's Highway." Three years later, Luis Alberto Urrea wrote about what happened to them. The result was a national bestseller, a Pulitzer Prize finalist, a "book of the year" in multiple newspapers, and a work proclaimed as a modern American classic.

  • The personal stories to human smuggling

    Elise P. - 5 years 8 months ago

This is an agonizing true story of a human smuggling attempt gone wrong using a well-known corridor between Mexico and the US called the Devil's Highway. 26 people smuggled into the US during this attempt died, and the leader was brought to trial and sentenced to jail. The remaining survivors were awarded immunity for their testimony and remained in the States - but some were so severely injured by their near-death experience that they are now trying to get back to Mexico. This was a no-win situation that shines a human light on all the personal stories on all sides. This book is as relevant today as it was in 2004.
