Not only a lament for loss of night sky in urban areas for aesthetic reasons, this book examines how much our nocturnal lives are dominated by artificial light, and how that affects the planet and its inhabitants ecologically, psychologically, and socially. Also, on a more metaphysical thread that weaves through those other aspects, the author's concern is the limit to imagination that results from lack of wonder and inquisitiveness that darkness would normally invite.
