Using science fiction to explore his views on duty, service, and the futility of war, Viet Nam vet Joe Haldeman's the Forever War follows one reluctant soldier through humanity's first encounters and conflict with an alien civilization. Thrilling. Poignant. Heartbreaking. Terrifying. Frustrating. Darkly comic. Widely recognized as the best science fiction war novel ever written.
HPB Staff ReviewJoe Haldeman's The Forever War goes beyond depicting a gritty and unforgiving space war; it puts you in the head of a man, a soldier, torn between worlds and time. It's ambitious and dedicated and not too long. In many ways, it feels like two different novels - maybe three. Regular people, who love and hate and get bored, thrown into the unknown and the deadly. One of, it not the best, science fiction work I've ever read. What happens when the world moves on without you?
