Gretchen Rubin's previous studies of happiness (The Happiness Project, Happier at Home, Better Than Before) lead her to examine the aspects of personality that can help lead to happiness and greater satisfaction in everyday life. While working on The Four Tendencies she discovered that how people respond to expectations (both expectations that they have of themselves and expectations imposed on by other people) has an enormous effect on personal happiness because it makes for better communication and helps them understand their habits. As an armchair psychologist with an interest in personality, I was intrigued by her findings and what they might imply. Ultimately, they help answer the question, "Why do I act the way that I do?" It does not purport to explain every aspect of personality or boil people down to one quippy descriptor--rather, it examines one particular aspect in the hope that it will shed light on the whole person. Both the book and its author subscribe to Socrates' directive to "Know Thyself." With this, I wholeheartedly agree. A quick and engaging read.
