Well written & good history lesson. Characters I cared about. Also learned more about why people left for California & the problems they encountered.

    Kristian Hannah delivers again!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • This could happen again. Read this book and understand that we are now in 21st Century Great Depression.

I know the area in the Great Plains where this story begins. Dalhart is in the TX panhandle; the XIT ranch is still there. They still have dust storms (often referred to as a “haboob” by those who experienced such storms in the Middle East). The poverty described is obscene. My parents lived through those years, but were lucky enough not to be in the Dust Bowl. My dad & his brothers stole coal from the rail yard to heat their home. They missed school for 6 mos because they had no shoes (not ok in the North). My grandmother dragged my grandfather down to the welfare office and kept the family from starving. Shoes.

Great book! Sad time in American history. I’m sure there are so many unsung heroes.
