  • Day of the Dead as told through the eyes of a child...zombie

    Andrew H. - 1 year 9 months ago

As a fan of the zombie genre, and intrigued by the recent trailer for the film adaptation, I read THE GIRL WITH ALL THE GIFTS to see if it earned its ranks within the genre. Taking place in an underground, military, research lab, the story focuses on one of the children (Melanie) who has been infected... one of the "hungries". Children can remain coherent and articulate, even if infected, as long as they can't smell any humans. This is a new idea in the zombie genre, the idea of going in and out of being a "zombie". The story eventually brings the characters out of the bunker, after an attack, and into the infected world above. This is where the characters begin to reveal who they truly are (or aren't) and when the story gets very intense. The author can fully capture the surroundings and tension in the air at any given moment, making it feel like you're actually there. This story is not for the squeamish, but definitely worth checking out if you are a fan of the zombie genre, as it brings new fresh ideas to already established tropes.

  • A new and unique portrayal of a zombie infested world.

    Jennifer R. - 1 year 11 months ago

This book is unlike any other zombie apocalypse book out there. It is full of horror, suspense, action, adventure, and mystery that will keep you on the edge of your seat. The book had moments that constantly shocked me and once I picked it up I was unable to put it down. The story mainly centers on a young girl named Melanie who lives locked up in a secure government facility with some other very special children. Melanie is not all that she seems to be, nor are those around her. When a sudden zombie attack overtakes the government facility, Melanie, along with a few others, escape out into the dangerous world and try to find their way to safety. Unending suspense combined with numerous amounts of twists and turns within the plot makes this a great read that you won't soon forget. I highly recommend this book!

  • Oh my gosh, oh my gosh, oh my gosh

    Bethany W. - 2 years 1 month ago

This is by far the best book I've read all year. It's complicated, yet so very simple that when I read the last page, I didn't understand how I hadn't seen it coming. From page one the reader is thrust into this delicately woven world of characters and landscapes, most of which are narrated through the very wise Melanie, the main character. You will instantly fall in love with her, despite what she is. This story is science fiction, horror, and love all wrapped up in a dark burrito of close calls and blood-curdling suspense. The faint of heart should stay far away, and really, I wouldn't suggest eating and reading this particular book at the same time.

  • Not just another Horror novel.

    Jessee R. - 3 years ago

A slow build until the final punch in the face. This book has hidden surprises and is not what it appears to be. Hope is all that remains in Pandora box. Keep that sentence in mind as you read the final pages. Enjoy and be surprised! Not just another Horror novel.

  • Just as heart warming as it is heart breaking

    Andy O. - 3 years 4 months ago

There are a lot of books about the zombie apocalypse, and not many of them approach it the way M.R. Carey does in 'Girl With All The Gifts'. Just as feel-good as it is depressing, gut-wrenching, and horrifying, you follow a young girl named Melanie as she discovers the world around her, as well as all the dark secrets about herself. With a rich post-apocalyptic Britain as the setting, and a particularly bizarre breed of living dead, Girl With All The Gifts offers an academic fascination with what makes 'hungeies' tick. Intriguing and disgusting, it is a must-read for any lover of the apocalypse.
