Interesting memoir of a dysfunctional family and how the children survived and overcome the obstacles. Well written.
Jeannette Walls is an excellent author. Her memoir is tragic and heart wrenching. Her delivery of her own childhood through her eyes without out right blaming her parents is amazing. The Glass Castle is a good read, but make sure you are up for the sadness because it never gets better, with the exception Jeannette and two of her siblings are what appear to be stable adults. Kudos to Jeannette and her siblings for telling their story. Mental illness affects us all to certain degrees. These poor children raised themselves.
I see this book at EVERY Goodwill that I go to, so I finally just decided to pick it up and I was not disappointed. An incredibly intimate story of a dysfunctional family and a young girl (the author) trying to make sense of the world. You feel a conflict of love and hate for the characters described and feel completely immersed into the author's world. A sad book, but very insightful and left me with a lot of takeaways. #SpringPicks
I was fortunate enough to read this book in my freshman year of high school. I went to charter school so the whole banned book situation didn't really apply to my district since my school governed itself. I'm glad I was given the opportunity to read it though as I found the book to be extremely inspiring especially in my most formative years. I've always been a fan of memoirs but I especially found Jeannette Walls' story inspiring. From having nothing but lard sandwiches to eat to becoming a best selling author, I couldn't help but admire Walls and all she went through to be the person she is today. It takes a lot of guts to be as vulnerable as she was in this book but I'm grateful she did it. #BannedBook
The Glass Castle, by Jeannette Walls, is one of my top favorite books. I read it straight through in 4 hours glued to my uncomfortable kitchen chair. Make sure you pick a chair with cushions when you start your copy! The Glass Castle is a memoir of the author's incredibly interesting, adventurous, and shocking childhood. Her parents were nomadic and were far from responsible but they loved their kids and showed them the world through extremely non-conventional experiences. The family moves all over the country - Nevada, Arizona, West Virginia - following potential job and money opportunities that always seem to fall through. The kids are the strong ones of the crew and keep the family surviving through all kinds of crazy experiences. It is just an amazing story.
