The Gods of Guilt is the fifth installment in Michael Connelly's 'Lincoln Lawyer' series. As with all of the preceding novels, Connelly conjures up characters who are compelling and believable. Mickey Haller (the titular lawyer) is full of real world flaws and foibles but doesn't easily fit the mold of either hero or anti-hero. Instead, Connelly draws you in with a portrait of a believable and three-dimensional person who is whip smart, resourceful, and gutsy; but who also has a full palette of not very romantic flaws--just like most real people. The plotting is quickly paced and full of twists and turns, but fortunately, avoids the sort of lazy repetitions and clichs that often plague later installments of character based genre series. Recommended.
HPB Staff ReviewMichael Connelly is a master of the mystery story. He's been cranking out top-notch crime thrillers for more than two decades, beginning in 1992 with The Black Echo featuring his iconic character, LAPD Det. Harry Bosch. In 2005, Connelly introduced LA defense attorney Mickey Haller in The Lincoln Lawyer. The book was so popular that none other than Matthew McConaughey was pegged to play Haller in the successful 2011 movie of the same name. In The Gods of Guilt, the fifth novel to focus on Haller, Mickey is back doing what he does best: working out of the backseat of his Lincoln Town Car and defending some of LA's less savory characters. This time it's personal: A long-ago client and former friend is found murdered, and the man accused of the crime wants Mickey to represent him. The Gods of Guilt has as many plot twists and turns as San Francisco's Lombard Street, and reading it is as much fun as riding a bike down Lombard with your feet off the pedals. It's not all fun and games, though; Connelly's protagonists are a brooding, introspective lot, and his books don't leave you with a smile of your face and a song in your heart. Still, they're a good read that will leave you anxiously awaiting his next novel. And as prolific as Connelly is, chances are you won't have long to wait.
