The Gruffalo is a charming childrens picture book about a mouse who meets and outwits other creatures in the "deep, dark wood." The work of Julie Donaldson is exquisite with lyrical rhymes. Its perfect to read aloud to your little one. Rhyming books like this one are an excellent primer for preschoolers to help them distinguish phonetic sounds, develop verbal skills and recognize patterns in the spelling of words. Some studies demonstrate that children who are able to detect rhymes can learn to read more quickly and successfully. The vocabulary in The Gruffalo will also enhance your childs early vocabulary. For instance, my 2-year-old says Astounding! in the appropriate context after repeated readings of this book. In fact, the phonological and repetitive brilliance of this book became evident when my daughter picked up and proceeded to recite the story all by herself, turning the pages and told the story as she remembered it. Tip: There are a host of great read-along activities at gruffalo.com Enjoy!
