I was recommended this book by a clinical psychologist who had done extensive testing and diagnosed me with ADHD-Inattentive Type. He wanted me to better understand some of the other factors in the problems I'd experienced at work and in school. This was not the first I had heard of the book but my initial response to it was very negative, being convinced that I was plenty sensitive already and the last thing I needed was to be more understanding toward myself. The psychologist, who had worked with Dr. Aron in grad school, gave better perspective on the issues covered by The Highly Sensitive Person. He explained that Dr. Aron initially did research into the phenomenon of shyness and through this discovered a personality she dubbed "highly sensitive". What I had not known before was the emphasis on sensory input in this theory, as it sounded like it merely dealt with emotional sensitivity. So I gruffly went to HPB on President's Day and bought the book, intending to breeze through it or just skim it for what little was helpful. Instead, her detailed descriptions of so many things I had experienced and believed were problems with me proved to be quite revelatory and helped me accept myriad things about myself I had tried to dismiss or change. While Dr. Aron is remarkably even-handed in her approach, the only downside to the book (in this edition) is dated information/discussion of meds available to "change your personality" as an HSP.
