Lambda Literary Award-winning author TJ Klune's breakout contemporary fantasy that's 1984 meets The Umbrella Academy with a pinch of Douglas Adams thrown in. (Gail Carriger)
A magical island. A dangerous task. A burning secret. Linus Baker leads a quiet, solitary life. At forty, he lives in a tiny house with a devious cat and his old records. As a Case Worker at the Department in Charge Of Magical Youth, he spends his days overseeing the well-being of children in government-sanctioned orphanages. When Linus is unexpectedly summoned by Extremely Upper Management he's given a curious and highly classified assignment: travel to Marsyas Island Orphanage, where six dangerous children reside: a gnome, a sprite, a wyvern, an unidentifiable green blob, a were-Pomeranian, and the Antichrist. Linus must set aside his fears and determine whether or not they're likely to bring about the end of days. But the children aren't the only secret the island keeps. Their caretaker is the charming and enigmatic Arthur Parnassus, who will do anything to keep his wards safe. As Arthur and Linus grow closer, long-held secrets are exposed, and Linus must make a choice: destroy a home or watch the world burn. An enchanting story, masterfully told, The House in the Cerulean Sea is about the profound experience of discovering an unlikely family in an unexpected place--and realizing that family is yours.0
This book made my emotions feel like they were being hugged. I loved every character and I want to adopt every one of these kids. Also this book is extremely funny from beginning to end. I truly can not love this book more than I already do. I just finished it and I already want to read it again.
HPB Staff ReviewThe House on the Cerulean Sea captures what it means be unique in a world that hates differences. People in this world shun individuals who don't fit their worldview. Despite this, these six, orphaned, magical kids embrace what makes them different. This book promotes the idea that no matter your orientation, size, linage, or unique ability, all people have feelings and dreams and should be treated with respect. I fell in love with this book and highly recommend it.
HPB Staff ReviewWhat a beautiful way to convey such an important lesson about what is important in life and how we treat people. This is a must read.
INCREDIBLE. Made me feel all the feelings. Have already gifted this book to multiple friends and family members.
Cozy. Whimsical. Lovely. I bought this book because I love it and can’t wait to read it again and again.
