  • A poetic, compelling novel about transformation and redemption.

    Elizabeth S. - 2 years 2 months ago

The Language of Flowers is the story of a woman who has lived a long time without love. As an infant, Victoria was abandoned right after her birth. Despite numerous failed attempts in foster care, a permanent family was never found for Victoria. Now 18, Victoria has been evicted from a transitional facility for other young women aging out of the system. Homeless, jobless, and kinless, Victoria's astonishing knowledge of the meaning of flowers gets her hired by a florist. There, Victoria cultivates her natural talent at creating exquisite bouquets. Victoria is transformed in the flower shop, where the secrets of her past unfold subtly, over time. As she enters new relationships, it becomes apparent that while it's difficult for Victoria to recognize love, it's nearly impossible for her to accept it. Victoria's story converges as she struggles to overcome her grief, while confronting numerous disappointments. The ending was a bit too tidy for me, but that doesn't diminish from this powerful story of redemption.
