Overview

" The] weird, beautiful, unapologetically apocalyptic Last Policeman trilogy is one of my favorite mystery series."--John Green, author of The Fault in Our Stars and Paper Towns

Winner of the 2013 Edgar(R) Award Winner for Best Paperback Original

What's the point in solving murders if we're all going to die soon, anyway?

Detective Hank Palace has faced this question ever since asteroid 2011GV1 hovered into view. There's no chance left. No hope. Just six precious months until impact.

The Last Policeman presents a fascinating portrait of a pre-apocalyptic United States. The economy spirals downward while crops rot in the fields. Churches and synagogues are packed. People all over the world are walking off the job--but not Hank Palace. He's investigating a death by hanging in a city that sees a dozen suicides every week--except this one feels suspicious, and Palace is the only cop who cares.

The first in a trilogy, The Last Policeman offers a mystery set on the brink of an apocalypse. As Palace's investigation plays out under the shadow of 2011GV1, we're confronted by hard questions way beyond "whodunit." What basis does civilization rest upon? What is life worth? What would any of us do, what would we really do, if our days were numbered?

  • The End is Nearer Than We Think!

    Justin M. - 6 years 11 months ago

The Last Policeman, Ben H. Winters' 2013 genre-bending thriller, is a wild ride through a near-future world threatened by the imminent impact of a massive rocket, where hope is at a minimum and no vice is too vile or taboo. In the midst of the madness, a single newly minted detective refuses to give up on his biggest case, despite the fact that nobody else believes the story is as important as he does. At times heartbreaking, hilarious, and filled with hope, The Last Policeman is very highly recommended.

  • The end of the world doesn't excuse murder

    Ian L. - 7 years ago

Detective Hank Palace knows that the world is going to end in three short months. He's not a conspiracy theorist, he-- and the rest of the world-- have been informed by the scientific community that there's an asteroid on its way that virtually guarantees humanity's doom. Palace is determined to spend his last months fighting for order, but at the end of the world disappearances don't mean what they used to, and suicide is a far likelier explanation than murder. In a department with dwindling resources, Palace has to work twice as hard to be heard. The Last Policeman is perfect for fans of mystery and fans of dystopian science fiction. It's a seamless blend that makes for a unique reading experience, dark and funny and satisfying. And, if you like it, it's the first in a trilogy, so there's more where that came from.
