What's not to love about con artists in a magical Venice-esque setting? Meet the Gentlemen Bastards, a crew of thieves richer and cleverer than everyone else in a city of nobility to be robbed and other gangs of criminals to be lied to. It's mind-bending, hysterical, and heartbreaking all at once, and it's the first in a seven-book sequence with volumes still coming out. Definitely for older teens and adults.
HPB Staff ReviewThis is the first novel written by author Scott Lynch, but the novel reads as if he has been writing for years. The characters come alive as you follow their path from lonely orphans to clever and conniving specialists of their trade. The city is so complex you feel as if you have stepped into the landscape, with the ancient and alien luminescent glass towers above and the canals and waterways below. Locke keeps you guessing with his various approaches to the problems that crop up in his work, all while ensuring that he and his gang always have a backup plan for when things could, and do, go wrong. Anything less than the greatest care could spell death in a land as unforgiving as Camorr. The politics at play are real and dangerous; a wrong step could mean fighting for life and limb. With a group of side characters that range from an Underworld Mafioso-Pirate to the richest and wisest of the gilded elite, this is a story that will keep you on the edge of your seat through its various twists and turns. You'll be rooting for a morally-gray Robin Hood-esque character that cares more for the con than the monetary reward.
HPB Staff ReviewThe Lies of Locke Lamora, the first installment of the Gentleman Bastards series, is a tale of cleverness, wit, and raw grit that could only be brought to light through the fantasy lens of Scott Lynch. The setting is an inspired venetian take on a strange broken island city; the city of Camorr, where Locke Lamora starts his life under the tutelage of a master crook and swindler. It is under his direction that Locke blooms into an up and coming mastermind. Battling and outwitting constables and Nobel folk alike, Locke and his cohorts find themselves in the cross hairs of an powerful new player in the Camorr with a mysterious vendetta. Through twists and turns, faints, and misdirection, Locke will lead his team of Gentelmen Bastards to riches... or ruin...
HPB Staff ReviewThis was truly a book I wish I had read sooner. As a longtime reader of the fantasy adventure genre, few books have ever cut through the crowd as decisively and as charmingly as The Lies of Locke Lamora. From its cast of excellently characterized thieves and nobles to the meticulously realized grime of their home city of Camorr, this is a dense read that rewards your attention even as you tear through chapter after chapter.
