Overview

The years-long New York Times bestseller and Goodreads Best Historical Novel that is "irresistible...seductive...with a high concept plot that keeps you riveted from the first page" (O, The Oprah Magazine)--soon to be a major motion picture from Spielberg's Dreamworks starring Michael Fassbender, Rachel Weisz, and Alicia Vikander, and directed by Derek Cianfrance.

After four harrowing years on the Western Front, Tom Sherbourne returns to Australia and takes a job as the lighthouse keeper on Janus Rock, nearly half a day's journey from the coast. To this isolated island, where the supply boat comes once a season, Tom brings a young, bold, and loving wife, Isabel. Years later, after two miscarriages and one stillbirth, the grieving Isabel hears a baby's cries on the wind. A boat has washed up onshore carrying a dead man and a living baby.

Tom, who keeps meticulous records and whose moral principles have withstood a horrific war, wants to report the man and infant immediately. But Isabel insists the baby is a "gift from God," and against Tom's judgment, they claim her as their own and name her Lucy. When she is two, Tom and Isabel return to the mainland and are reminded that there are other people in the world. Their choice has devastated one of them.

"Elegantly rendered...heart-wrenching...beautifully drawn" (USA TODAY), The Light Between Oceans is a gorgeous debut novel, not soon to be forgotten.

  • This exquisitely-written novel lends itself to book club discussion.

The Light Between Oceans is the story of a family attempting to navigate the vast chasm of uncertainty between seemingly-right and seemingly-wrong decisions. Tom and Isabel Sherbourne are the only residents on Janus Rock, an isolated little island off the coast of Australia where Tom works as a lighthouse keeper. After suffering several miscarriages, and with mounting despair, Tom and Isabel discover a boat washed up on shore. Inside the boat, they find a man's body and an infant still clinging to life. Isabel insists the baby is a gift from God and claims the child as her own. It's an impulsive decision, with unintended and far-reaching consequences. But Stedman's writing is so compelling and so urgent, it's easy to get swept up in a story where there aren't any easy answers. In confronting moral ambiguity, The Light Between Oceans is a beautiful, engaging story about transformation and forgiveness. This is a highly-recommended choice for book club discussion.

#BannedBook Hashtag I love the movie and the book helped me understand the movie.

  • Get swept up in the tide of this mesmerizing journey

I was shedding tears by then end of this beautiful book. The story begins slowly, building the events, leading to the moment that sets everything in motion. With such hard choices before these characters, you might find yourself on one side or the other. Or you might get swept up in the tide - wishing, dreaming, hurting, and loving alongside each person. #RequiredReading

A friend and I started a book club, with this being our first choice (in anticipation of the film at the time). It was a heartwrenching story, full of detail and depth. You could feel the love from each character as you read, and I loved how every piece of the 'puzzle' was needed for an overall phenomenal book. #SummerReading
