Overview

In this #1 national bestseller, "master storyteller" (Houston Chronicle) Stephen King, writing as Richard Bachman, tells the tale of the contestants of a grueling walking competition where there can only be one winner--the one that survives.

"I give my congratulations to the winner among your number, and my acknowledgements of valor to the losers."

Against the wishes of his mother, sixteen-year-old Ray Garraty is about to compete in the annual grueling match of stamina and wits known as The Long Walk. One hundred boys must keep a steady pace of four miles per hour without ever stopping...with the winner being awarded "The Prize"--anything he wants for the rest of his life. But, as part of this national tournament that sweeps through a dystopian America year after year, there are some harsh rules that Garraty and ninety-nine others must adhere to in order to beat out the rest. There is no finish line--the winner is the last man standing. Contestants cannot receive any outside aid whatsoever. Slow down under the speed limit and you're given a warning. Three warnings and you're out of the game--permanently....

  • Long Walk, Great Read

Wow, what a fantastic novel this was! "The Long Walk" is an earlier novel by the great horror master Stephen King and serves as a great example that even in the earliest epoch of his career he was just as great as he is today. This particular work is one of my favorite examples of the dystopian genre and is just as horrifying as anything he has written otherwise. The premise and setting are extremely interesting, and the fascinating cast of characters will have you enjoying each step of the long walk right beside them on that hot pavement. Coming from his other novels, it's interesting to see King's take on the dystopian genre, and he does it so well just as he took on epic fantasy with "The Eyes of the Dragon". I honestly hope that King continues to explore and execute his take on other literary genres out there. It's a tribute to his excellent skills and imagination that he can write successfully in such an amazing variety of genres as any reader will swiftly discover when they pick up this engrossing read. The reader will sympathize with the characters and their monumental, deadly struggle, the reader will despise the villain and the vicious system he exemplifies, and will enjoy the experience of cheering on the walkers each step of the way to their destiny. #Bannedbook

  • You can feel the pain the characters went through when reading this.

Stephen king is a fantastic writer, everyone knows that at this point, but I feel like this novel stands out among the rest. It’s a different style for him sure but the way he writes the characters and the pain they suffered through is terrific. He puts so much detail into the way they felt and what they did. The characters are very developed and the dialogue sounded like genuine teenagers. I’d definitely recommend this book if you love horror and very detailed writing.
