When Thomas wakes up in the cage, he remembers nothing but his name. Suddenly, he is thrust into a place called "the Glade" with 60 other boys, some of which have been in the Glade for two years. Thomas is determined to escape through the maze that surrounds the Glade by becoming a Runner. However, the maze is inhabited by fierce creatures, the boys call Grievers, that will kill any Runner who isn't in the Glade by the time the doors close at nightfall. When Thomas saves the life of a boy caught in the maze at night, the boys begin to believe escape is near. Then a girl arrives in the Glade with an ominous note, and their whole world begins to change. The book is fast-paced, never losing momentum from the first page to the last.
