Overview

'Between life and death there is a library, and within that library, the shelves go on forever. Every book provides a chance to try another life you could have lived. To see how things would be if you had made other choices... Would you have done anything different, if you had the chance to undo your regrets?'

A dazzling novel about all the choices that go into a life well lived, from the internationally bestselling author of Reasons to Stay Alive and How To Stop Time.

Somewhere out beyond the edge of the universe there is a library that contains an infinite number of books, each one the story of another reality. One tells the story of your life as it is, along with another book for the other life you could have lived if you had made a different choice at any point in your life. While we all wonder how our lives might have been, what if you had the chance to go to the library and see for yourself? Would any of these other lives truly be better?

In The Midnight Library, Matt Haig's enchanting new novel, Nora Seed finds herself faced with this decision. Faced with the possibility of changing her life for a new one, following a different career, undoing old breakups, realizing her dreams of becoming a glaciologist; she must search within herself as she travels through the Midnight Library to decide what is truly fulfilling in life, and what makes it worth living in the first place.

  • Reads like a warm blanket on an Autumn Night

The Midnight Library addresses all the 'what if' opportunities through the various books within the library as each book can take you to one of the lives that you could have had. Through Nora's adventure, it becomes clear that the grass comes in a variety of shades. Not necessary bad or good, but just different shades of green. Each life has its benefits and consequences. Even in her most ideal life, she chooses to leave it. Matt Haig has created a weird Christmas Carol for those who ever wondered about the different lives they may have lived. This was a very enjoyable read and I recommend it to anyone who has regrets on certain decisions and wonders 'what if.'

  • Intriguing read

    Maureen S. - 4 years 1 month ago

It was an interesting take on the if then theory. I liked how the author referenced the physics of alternate universe to give credence to the premise. Like “It’s a Wonderful Life”, life is what you make it!

  • Great story, good characters and made me think about my life and my regrets in a different way.

Book just okay. Condition of book 5 stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Purchase transaction smooth. I felt the book would be greatly improved with comprehensive editing. Interesting premise that careful review of any life/event can alter one’s outlook/perspective.

Interesting story but the scenarios were too often repeated and became boring
