The Mysterious Benedict Society is unique among children's books because of its combination of elements: the clever wordplay is reminiscent of The Phantom Tollbooth, with the rollicking adventure and suspense of any good mystery, and meaningful ideas fleshed out that make the best children's books resonate with grown-ups too. Reynie Muldoon, Sticky Washington, Kate Wetherall, and Constance Contraire have real struggles and fears. These characters are ones children could imagine in their classes or on their street with some added quirks. They share the challenges we all share, which is why this story resonates with adults as well as children. For a story about children who are intellectually gifted, the Mysterious Benedict Society is really about bravery and heart--doesn't everyone wonder whether she is brave? Reynie and his friends face monumental problems and are responsible for protecting everyone from a danger only they understand. The fast-paced chapters will keep you guessing and the conclusion doesn't disappoint. The best part? There are two more stories starring Reynie Muldoon and his friends to follow when you've sped through this one.
HPB Staff ReviewThis is a book I picked up to figure out if it would be appropriate for my young nephew, but I ended up finishing just for me. The concept is fun, clever, and wild. The characters are either believable and relatable (the good guys) or villainous and outrageous (the villains), but both sorts were great fun to learn more about. The story itself is a mashup of adventure and spy thriller, and although the target audience is children around 10 years old, this 31 year old had a hoot of a time.
