  • A Fantastic Introduction to Pokemon

    Nathan S. - 5 years 9 months ago

I'll admit that I have a lot of nostalgia for this handbook, as it was one of my first introductions into the Pokemon series. But even leaving nostalgia aside, I feel that while there have been many Pokemon guides, this has to be by far one of the best. What helps separate this handbook from other Pokemon guides is that the author understood put a lot of detail into each Pokedex entry. Often with later handbooks, there would only be a threadbare, one-sentence description, with most of the focus being instead on the moveset. The moves are necessary, of course, but just a list of them doesn't really help you understand the Pokemon. Here, we got full-fledged paragraphs, with lots of interesting details about the species. For instance, did you know that Sandshrew is a picky eater, or that Magikarp used to be strong and indestructible? These engaging descriptions accompanying the colorful pictures helped me really connect with the Pokemon and imagine being their friends on a journey. If possible, I recommend getting the Deluxe Collector's Edition. It has some extra content at the end covering the main characters from the anime, as well as info on the Kanto/Indigo gym leaders. The one weakness I see with the handbook is that it tries to mesh the game and anime settings together, and it doesn't always work perfectly. That said, I can understand the need to appeal to fans of both the games and the anime, and it doesn't really affect things that much. With so many new Pokemon discovered since the original 151 Pokemon, this handbook is a bit outdated, but its overall quality remains impeccable. This handbook set the bar for future guides, and if you want to learn about the original set of Pokemon, this is the go-to book. #SummerReading
