William Goldman's modern fantasy classic is a simple, exceptional story about quests--for riches, revenge, power, and, of course, true love--that's thrilling and timeless.
Anyone who lived through the 1980s may find it impossible--inconceivable, even--to equate The Princess Bride with anything other than the sweet, celluloid romance of Westley and Buttercup, but the film is only a fraction of the ingenious storytelling you'll find in these pages. Rich in character and satire, the novel is set in 1941 and framed cleverly as an "abridged" retelling of a centuries-old tale set in the fabled country of Florin that's home to "Beasts of all natures and descriptions. Pain. Death. Brave men. Coward men. Strongest men. Chases. Escapes. Lies. Truths. Passions."

This book has it all: Rodents of Unusual Size, a Pit of Despair, the most beautiful woman in the world, a six-fingered swordsman and a dread pirate. When Buttercup is forced to marry Prince Humperdinck, she does not know that his proposal is the first step in a plan to kill her, pin the blame on a neighboring country and start a war. Buttercup also doesn't know that her true love, who she believes dead, will not let that happen. This book is hysterically funny. Every version of it is worth owning: the wonderful movie, the audio book narrated by the film's director Rob Reiner, the movie soundtrack by Dire Straits' Mark Knopfler and, of course, this incomparable book with only "the good parts."
HPB Staff ReviewThe Princess Bride is one of my all-time favorite movies and I am finally getting around to reading the book. Since the story is already familiar to me I am enjoying it in a different format. I find that as I am reading the book I am hearing it in the voices of the actors who played each character in the movie. The other interesting thing is that this edition contains commentary and background information by William Goldman that supplement what I already knew about the book and story. It is tremendously fun and a great read!
HPB Staff ReviewIt's an adventure, a love story, and, at times, very funny. This book is meant for the young and old. If you like fairy tales or just a good action story then this is what you are looking for. It will make you fall in love with Westley and Buttercup and root for Inigo and Fezzik. It is my all-time favorite book.
