Set in the near future, the USA is the definition of the gap between the upper and lower class. In a society where work is scarce, Ben Richards applies to one of the reality shows meant to entertain the bourgeoisie. The Running Man is a game show in which a contestant is paid for every minute they manage to remain alive, whilst a number of trained killers are out to kill them. The public is shocked and amused when Ben Richards not only beats the record of longest standing contestant, but turns the game show into a deadly chase in which money isn't the final prize.
HPB Staff ReviewIt was surprisingly disturbing. Other stephen king stories I've read have had a supernatural element to them. This seemed a more probable future outcome thus scarier - gulp. Recommended.
"The Running Man" by Stephen King is a standout effort by the great horror master way back in the early stages of his vaunted writing career. The book is another foray into the world of the dystopian by King, something he seemed to quite like early on. It's an excellent example of that type of story, and is absolutely fascinating to watch unfold as the brutal form of entertainment is shown to the reader and the plucky hero strives against seemingly impossible odds. It bears great resemblance to "The Hunger Games" by Suzanne Collins, despite having been written long before that series of novels came on the scene. I must say, "The Running Man" stacks up quite favorably to that series in terms of writing, suspense, action, character, and premise, although I had a good time reading those as well. According to King, "The Running Man" was written in a single week which is simply astounding to me that he can produce a work of such quality and caliber in a tremendously small timeframe. That is a testament to the skill of the master who wrote this work. #Bannedbook
