Overview

A desperate man attempts to win a reality TV game where the only objective is to stay alive in this #1 national bestseller from Stephen King, writing as Richard Bachman.

"Tomorrow at noon, the hunt begins. Remember his face "

Ben Richards is a desperate man. With no job, no money, no way out, and a young daughter in need of proper medical attention, he must turn to the only possibility of striking it rich in this near-future dystopian America: participating in the ultra-violent TV programming of the government-sanctioned Games Network. Ben soon finds himself selected as a contestant on the biggest and the best that the Games Network has to offer: "The Running Man," a no-holds-barred thirty-day struggle to stay alive as public enemy number one, relentlessly hunted by an elite strike force bent on killing him as quickly as possible in front of an audience all-too eager to see that happen. It means a billion dollars in prize money if he can live for the next month. No one has ever survived longer than eight days. But desperation can push a person do things they never thought possible--and Ben Richards is willing to go the distance in this ultimate game of life and death....

  • Dystopian Society Ruled By Reality Shows - Sound Familiar?

    Sylvia A. - 4 years 1 month ago

Set in the near future, the USA is the definition of the gap between the upper and lower class. In a society where work is scarce, Ben Richards applies to one of the reality shows meant to entertain the bourgeoisie. The Running Man is a game show in which a contestant is paid for every minute they manage to remain alive, whilst a number of trained killers are out to kill them. The public is shocked and amused when Ben Richards not only beats the record of longest standing contestant, but turns the game show into a deadly chase in which money isn't the final prize.

  • Could it happen?!?!?!

It was surprisingly disturbing. Other stephen king stories I've read have had a supernatural element to them. This seemed a more probable future outcome thus scarier - gulp. Recommended.

  • Get Running to this Novel!

"The Running Man" by Stephen King is a standout effort by the great horror master way back in the early stages of his vaunted writing career. The book is another foray into the world of the dystopian by King, something he seemed to quite like early on. It's an excellent example of that type of story, and is absolutely fascinating to watch unfold as the brutal form of entertainment is shown to the reader and the plucky hero strives against seemingly impossible odds. It bears great resemblance to "The Hunger Games" by Suzanne Collins, despite having been written long before that series of novels came on the scene. I must say, "The Running Man" stacks up quite favorably to that series in terms of writing, suspense, action, character, and premise, although I had a good time reading those as well. According to King, "The Running Man" was written in a single week which is simply astounding to me that he can produce a work of such quality and caliber in a tremendously small timeframe. That is a testament to the skill of the master who wrote this work. #Bannedbook
