A teenage boy is found murdered on the grounds of St. Kilda’s, an all girl's boarding school. A year later and the case has gone cold with zero leads. But that changes when sixteen-year-old Holly, daughter of Detective Frank Mackey, brings an anonymous card displaying a photo of the murdered boy and "I know who killed him" in cut out letters to Detective Stephen Moran. Someone at St. Kilda's knows something and Detective Moran joins forces with the abrasive Detective Antoinette Conway to find out. Is this the case that will finally land him a highly coveted spot on the Dublin Murder Squad? The Secret Place paints a very vivid picture of OMG, like, hello? the politics of teenage girlhood. Moran and Conway are caught in the middle of two enemy cliques - the popular girls and the odd crowd - and the secrets that entail. Tana French expertly showcases teenage drama, rising emotions, and coming of age. I was taken aback by the nostalgic ghost of my teenage years prickling up from somewhere hidden away. Though this wasn't my favorite book of the series, it was still a great read. I'd recommend this and every other book of the Dublin Murder series - read in order or on their own. Tana French is so. damn. good.
