If you are looking for a tale of intrigue, deception, heroes, villains, friendships and of course love, then The Shadow of the Wind, by Carlos Ruiz Zafn is a must read. The story follows Daniel, a young man who is mourning the loss of his mother. Daniel works in his father's antiquarian bookstore and uncovers a mystery in the heart of Barcelona, Spain 1945 that carries him into a world he didn't see around him. As Daniel's understanding of the world grows so does his understanding of himself. Zafn's prose is smooth as a chorus and as beautiful as poetry. Possibly the greatest writer of his generation, The Shadow of the Wind is the second-best selling novel in Spain only to be outdone by Don Quixote by Cervantes.
HPB Staff ReviewThis one caught my eye because I love books about books. Young Daniel is ten when his father takes him on an adventure to the Cemetery of Forgotten Books. Daniel is tasked with roaming the stacks of this enchanting place, which has been set away and nearly forgotten, and choosing a book to protect at all costs. He soon discovers that someone is trying to delete his chosen book from history and he must find out why.
HPB Staff ReviewThe perfect book for book lovers. This is both due to the wonderful, fully-realized, well-read characters, as well as the incredibly fluid writing style of Carlos Ruiz Zafon. The overarching mystery entangles you from the beginning, but it is the nature of these characters that keeps one reading and wishing to hear more.
