Overview

Before Doctor Sleep, there was The Shining, a classic of modern American horror from the undisputed master, Stephen King.

Jack Torrance's new job at the Overlook Hotel is the perfect chance for a fresh start. As the off-season caretaker at the atmospheric old hotel, he'll have plenty of time to spend reconnecting with his family and working on his writing. But as the harsh winter weather sets in, the idyllic location feels ever more remote . . . and more sinister. And the only one to notice the strange and terrible forces gathering around the Overlook is Danny Torrance, a uniquely gifted five-year-old.

  • Knock... Knock... REDRUM

A roller-coater ride which starts off the intrigue at a steady pace before abruptly dropping you straight into the darkness of isolated oblivion. Choose your next move wisely, for it may be your last turn in a maze of escalating insanity, at a hotel which might very well be like the one closest to your next highway exit.

  • Better than the movie!!!

    Mary C. - 1 year 5 months ago

This book is different from the movie, very! This is the first book that kept me up and I woke up thinking about it! It was psychologically scary, Eeek!! Most of you know of the movie. So I can't give too much away, JUST READ IT! Enjoy the movie for what it is, its own entity and the book for what it is, its own entity as well.

  • Superior to the film

    Will S. - 2 years 8 months ago

While I love Kubrick's film to pieces, I admit that everything I love about it is present in the novel, with more besides. When I picked up the book, I expected to react to it in the same way as the movie: to find the characters only lightly engaging, and to be urging the Overlook Hotel to get around to the insanity to inject some excitement into the story. I was pleasantly surprised to find that, this time around, I was actually rooting for Jack. In fact, while his loss of sanity was a forgone conclusion, I was hoping the Torrence family as a unit would survive. It made the story all the more tragic and poignant to watch the dissolution of a family of generally good and likable, if flawed, people instead of cardboard cutouts as the novel reached its nightmarish crescendo. The Shining is by no means a perfect book, and I hardly wish to insult as fine a film as its "adaptation." But that's just it: the two are essentially different stories. If you find anything you like in the movie, you would be doing yourself a disservice not to read King's novel.

  • A man's descent into madness...

    Chaz F. - 6 years 6 months ago

In a world turned upside down, one man's descent into madness is his own family's living hell. Trapped in an empty, grandiose hotel during a snowstorm Jack Torrance, his wife Wendy and son Danny try to make themselves at home and enjoy the stay. However, it seems, the hotel has a different plan for the Torrance family. Is it something supernatural, or has Jack actually snapped? Highly recommended.
