The instant #1 New York Times bestseller
"An unforgettable--and Hollywood-bound--new thriller... A mix of Hitchcockian suspense, Agatha Christie plotting, and Greek tragedy."
--Entertainment Weekly
The Silent Patient is a shocking psychological thriller of a woman's act of violence against her husband--and of the therapist obsessed with uncovering her motive.
Alicia Berenson's life is seemingly perfect. A famous painter married to an in-demand fashion photographer, she lives in a grand house with big windows overlooking a park in one of London's most desirable areas. One evening her husband Gabriel returns home late from a fashion shoot, and Alicia shoots him five times in the face, and then never speaks another word.
Alicia's refusal to talk, or give any kind of explanation, turns a domestic tragedy into something far grander, a mystery that captures the public imagination and casts Alicia into notoriety. The price of her art skyrockets, and she, the silent patient, is hidden away from the tabloids and spotlight at the Grove, a secure forensic unit in North London.
Theo Faber is a criminal psychotherapist who has waited a long time for the opportunity to work with Alicia. His determination to get her to talk and unravel the mystery of why she shot her husband takes him down a twisting path into his own motivations--a search for the truth that threatens to consume him....

The Silent Patient is a mind bending thriller novel that touches on the interesting relationship between Patient and Therapist. The plot is very interesting and engaging, a real page turner. A decent ending with something I hadn't anticipated. A good read for anyone wanting to get into the spooky mood.
HPB Staff ReviewInteresting! Psychological and a good story that is sad.
Not one of my favorite books, but several of my friends enjoyed it.
A must read! I found this book very difficult to put down. Listening to it made it even better. Do not pass up the opportunity to listen to this book. #SpringPicks
This is author Alex Michaelides' first book, and he is off to a great start! I haven't read a psychological thriller this good in a long time. I hope no one spoils this book by revealing too much, because it is the "Wait! What?" moment that every reader is certain to experience that makes it such a good read. The book is about a successful artist who becomes mute and is institutionalized for murdering her equally successful photographer husband. A psychotherapist is determined to help her, and to get to the truth of what happened and why. The story moves along nicely as it introduces characters and unfolds family backgrounds, relationships, and emotions. It's a pretty good book, until the moment it becomes a really good book--a testament to the author's writing skill. I wanted to start it over and read it again, with a different mind set after having finished it. This book will surely make a great movie, and I can hardly wait for it to come out! #SpringPicks
