Overview

"At once a scholar's homage to The Iliad and startlingly original work of art by an incredibly talented new novelist....A book I could not put down."
--Ann Patchett

"Mary Renault lives again " declares Emma Donoghue, author of Room, referring to The Song of Achilles, Madeline Miller's thrilling, profoundly moving, and utterly unique retelling of the legend of Achilles and the Trojan War. A tale of gods, kings, immortal fame, and the human heart, The Song of Achilles is a dazzling literary feat that brilliantly reimagines Homer's enduring masterwork, The Iliad. An action-packed adventure, an epic love story, a marvelously conceived and executed page-turner, Miller's monumental debut novel has already earned resounding acclaim from some of contemporary fiction's brightest lights--and fans of Mary Renault, Bernard Cornwell, Steven Pressfield, and Colleen McCullough's Masters of Rome series will delight in this unforgettable journey back to ancient Greece in the Age of Heroes.

Although it did not have many spicy parts the way that Miller shows the relationship between Patroclus and Achilles is amazing. And even though I did not know much of Greek mythology, it was such a good starter book and hope to read more.

  • What has this book ever done to me?

I'll tell you what this book has done to me, smashed my heart into a million pieces! The Song Of Achilles is about, obviously Achilles but is told from the lesser known point of view of his friend and lover, Patroclus. Everyone knows the story of Achilles or have at least heard of him- A prince whose mother blessed him by dipping him in the river Styx all except for his heel and who goes on a rampage when his "friend" is killed during the Trojan war. This version sticks closer to the original myth. Gone is the ridiculous mother who didn't want to get her hands wet, now she is the goddess/nymph Thetis who grants her son Achilles swiftness and grace beyond human measure. Gone is the 'friend' title that Patroclus bears in the popular version of the myth and once again he is given the title of lover. Patroclus' point of view reveals an Achilles from boyhood, still as graceful but full of joy and curiosity and light. You can tell just how much the pair cares for each other and even knowing the obvious ending of the book you can't help but hope for a happy ending.

If you want an epic romance and a story of Greek Mythology this is the book for you. The romance of the book is so sweet and the story is so amazing. You can tell how much the author cared for these characters and this story. She did an amazing job.

  • The Iliad like you've never read before

For anyone looking to step into adult fiction but still loves the fast pace of a young adult novel look no further! Told from the point of view of Patroclus, Achilles' companion and lover, follow the pair from boyhood to their peaceful preteen years and finally to the climax of the story- The Trojan war. Even knowing how the story ends you can't help but become attached to the characters and be heart broken as it ends.
