Tesla and her new husband Shal are enjoying their honeymoon cruise to Mars when he tries to stop a murderer and becomes the prime suspect himself. ......... Shal is a famous detective who comes across as mild mannered and charming. Heroically downplaying his battered condition -- the arrest was somewhat "enthusiastic" -- Shal is soon heard sharing war stories with his guards in the ship's brig. ......... Tesla is projecting the image of a superficial sophisticate, but the woman has a spine of tungsten, literally. Tesla hides her panic and pain behind a sweet little service dog and a veil of sparkling repartee. She doesn't unleash her great wealth and terrifying attorney until she needs to defend her husband. ......... Creative cursing is a concept often implied but seldom demonstrated by authors, until now. This novel's lawyer, Fantine -- oh I like her! -- swears fluently without ever using a swear word. Her vocabulary -- "mammering lobsters," really? -- made me laugh. ......... The multiple murder mystery is convoluted and confusing: "Everyone has a secret, and everyone lies." Any holes in the plot are more than offset by the entertaining personalities, atmosphere, action and fun. Plus, the science is so authentic that the space cruiser's Coriolis spin doesn't just customize gravity, it alters weapon trajectory, too. To Mary Robinette Kowal: Bravo!
