Overview

This is the way the world ends: with a nanosecond of computer error in a Defense Department laboratory and a million casual contacts that form the links in a chain letter of death.

And here is the bleak new world of the day after: a world stripped of its institutions and emptied of 99 percent of its people. A world in which a handful of panicky survivors choose sides -- or are chosen. A world in which good rides on the frail shoulders of the 108-year-old Mother Abagail -- and the worst nightmares of evil are embodied in a man with a lethal smile and unspeakable powers: Randall Flagg, the dark man.

In 1978 Stephen King published The Stand, the novel that is now considered to be one of his finest works. But as it was first published, The Stand was incomplete, since more than 150,000 words had been cut from the original manuscript.

Now Stephen King's apocalyptic vision of a world blasted by plague and embroiled in an elemental struggle between good and evil has been restored to its entirety. The Stand The Complete And Uncut Edition includes more than five hundred pages of material previously deleted, along with new material that King added as he reworked the manuscript for a new generation. It gives us new characters and endows familiar ones with new depths. It has a new beginning and a new ending. What emerges is a gripping work with the scope and moral complexity of a true epic.

For hundreds of thousands of fans who read The Stand in its original version and wanted more, this new edition is Stephen King's gift. And those who are reading The Stand for the first time will discover a triumphant and eerily plausible work of the imagination that takes on the issues that will determine our survival.

  • Stephen King's dark tale of the apocalypse is as hair-raising as ever.

    Liz N. - 1 year 11 months ago

The Stand was originally written in 1978 and updated in 1990, but even in 2016, King's vision depicting a pandemic of apocalyptic proportions caused by an escaped biological weapon is as eerily compelling as it was 30 years ago. Over 99% of the U.S. succumbs to the lethally engineered virus, but for a select few, what seems to be the end is only the beginning. The survivors begin to experience intense dreams; one of a 108-year-old woman who radiates righteous goodness, the other of the 'dark man'-- a malevolent entity who may not be human at all. It becomes clear that those who are left in the aftermath are expected to choose a side and make their stand to see what fate will ultimately befall the human race. There are plenty of bone-chilling moments here to satiate any horror fan, but with its darkly religious themes, profoundly complex characters, and masterful depiction of the struggle between good and evil, this book is nothing short of an epic.

  • The End Has Come

    Christina C. - 2 years 11 months ago

The place where you made your stand never mattered. Only that you were thereand still on your feet. June 13, 1990. Thirty-seven minutes past two in the morning, and sixteen seconds. That is the exact moment that the world began to end. It didnt end in the fiery destruction of Nuclear war, nor in the impact of some ginormous meteorite. No, it ended because of a malfunction somewhere on an army base that shouldnt exist. A deadly virus, known to some as the Super Flu and to others as the deadly Captain Trips, runs rampant through the population. By June 27th, most of America is dead, and by Independence Day the rest of the world has followed. Mother Abigail, an ancient woman living in a cornfield, calls to those with goodness and compassion in their hearts. In his heart, hope-that indestructible weed of the human heart-had begun to bloom again. The other is of the Darkness, the Walkin Dude who calls out to the weak and the frightened. Around these two figures the remaining population gather. Neither is willing to let the other exist without a fight.
